Latest fishing report

Latest fishing report

2.11.24

SHORE - Good numbers of moki have been caught at White rock and the Spit with places like Ocean beach, Wainui, Fitzroy and beaches west of Sinclair head all worth a fish in the coming month or 3.

A few nice snaps have been caught in the harbour, out west and in Palliser bay but it hasnt really started to fire yet, hopefully soon. Ive seen pics of a couple of 5-7kg fish plus the 20lber caught off plimmerton wharf. Raumati, Tehoro and Whagamoana (snapper bay) are my 3 top picks if you want snapper this summer.

Some good trevally fishing at palces like Seatoun, Pencarrow and Ocean beach has been happenning. a nice 3-4kg fish from the harbour and an angler taking 5 nice trevs from the south coast have been recent highlights.

Good numbers of gurnard have been caught in Evans bay, Clyde key, Hallswell and Raumati. Palliser bay should start top fire when its nice and clean as well.

No verified kingfish landings yet but a few seen around the traps so its any day now. Time to get your live mackerel catching and slidebaiting gear sorted.

Whitebait - it was a pretty good season this year with 1-2lb catches quite comon and some better hauls every week or two over the 2 month season (5-10ltr + bucket full). I got out about 5 times a week through october and if anyones need advice on nets, techniques and places to go, I'm happy to help.....

BOAT - The best snapper fishing has been from Kapiti northwards, certainly more consistent fishing than around Mana. When the waters been clean the fish have been in close (10-15mtrs) but generally the better fishing has been in 30-50mtrs and deeper. Slow jigs and bait fishing has been productive.

Deepwater fishing - theres been a few good hauls of bluenose and puka out in the trench of late and some nice bass too. Out west, not too much to report as its been too rough to venture out. there should be alot of puka around so its just a matter of putting in some time on the 150 - 250mtrs reefs up and down the coast. Makara is my pick for this time of the year.

harbour - plenty of gurnard and kahawai with a few trevs around places like point gordan, ward island, seatoun. Some nice snapper and the odd kingfish getting caught as well. no biggies have been reported but some good school fish mixed in wioth the gurnard.

The ususal good cod and teri fishing on the south particularly around the 60-100mtr marks on the turn of the tide.

10.9.24

Shore - good numbers of gurnard around in evans bay and on the south coast. A 20lb snapper was caught off the plimmerton boating club wharf recently and a couple of nice moki were caught off the south coast recently. It should be snapper time from kapiti northwards, as soon as the water cleans up a bit. Trevally have been caught in palliser bay and seatoune wharf lately.

boat - good snapper out west with nice warehou, kingfish, trevally  and gurnard around sometimes in food numbers. Its off season for puka but there's still bass and bluenose around at the trench. Inshore fishing the south has been a mixed bag of snapper, tarakihi, bluecod and trevally with gurnard around as well.

harbour fishing has been full on for gurnard, some large bluecod near the entrance along with trevs and pretty soon the first numbers of snapper and kingi should move in.

october sees the arival of blue moki, hapuku in our waters post spawning.

2.6.24

As we move into the colder months species like snapper and kingfish seem to go a bit deeper, sometimes below 100mtrs. We still get them off the shore and close in during the winter butcertainy not as many numbers.

kapiti coast - alot of spiney dogs and red cod have moved in but there still excellent snapper and gurnard fishing in 20-50mtrs on the sand.

surfcasting has been tougher but theres still the odd nice snapper to be had if you put the time in. Certainly the further north you go, the better your chance on snapper

south coast - theres still a few snapper getting caught in palliser bay off the beach as well as the odd gurnard and trevally. boaties are enjoying a good mixed bag of snapper, trevally, tarakihi and cod with some good hapuku fishing in the deep (if you know the spots)

wgtn harbour - off the shore its mainly kahawai and gurnard with the odd snapper, moki and trevally if your lucks in. Boaties have been really getting into the gurnard particularly from Ward island down to the entrance. The snapper have been harder to find but are still hanging in the 20-25mtrs depths and occasionally in shallower. a good number of blue mackerel are around and therre should be some warehou turning up any time i the next month or so

West coast - some excellent hapuku fishing out wide with soe good snapper and kingfish mixed inwith them as well at some of the 100-150mtr spots. good snapper still around in 50-70mtrs as well as trevally and tarakihi up and down the coast. Shore fishers have had a few JDs from plimmerton wharf recently

Bluefin tuna have been caught off Cape Pallsier on the good days and will continue over the next months for the super keen and experienced fishers. An exceptional fishery but needs extreme caution as its a long way out and gets really rough sometimes against the forecast.

At the moment there are plenty of hapuku around in the deep with snapper, trevally, tarakihi and gurnard inshore and most other species mixed in for good measure.

On a 6hr trip we can go south to Makara or north to Hunters bank and sometimes out wide for hapuku. Its generally an inshore fishing trip but we are happy to go deep if everyone on board is keen.

Our 4hr trips are mainly around Mana island and Pukerua bay. There's good numbers of snapper, trevally, tarakihi and gurnard with the odd kingfish, jd and blue mackerel as well
